THE MAN WHO DRIVES WITH HEART

And Leads With Integrity

In a world that often mistakes wealth for worth, Vas Comblas has built something rare, a community defined not by luxury alone, but by loyalty, integrity, and genuine human connection.

Thunderbolt Run may look like a high-end supercar rally from the outside, but beneath the horsepower and scenic drives lies something far deeper: a story of resilience, purpose, and people coming together.

Vas has never been interested in appearances. A former nightclub bouncer, gym owner, and entrepreneur, he has experienced both success and failure, losing everything more than once and rebuilding from the ground up.

Those experiences shaped the philosophy behind Thunderbolt Run: life is about people, not possessions.

THE STRENGTH TO RISE

Born in South Australia to a Greek migrant family, Vas’s childhood was marked by hardship. His family lived in government housing with outdoor toilets and little money. Birthday and Christmas presents were rare, and he and his brother shared a single pushbike.

At school Vas was small — barely 35 kilos in Year 8 — but he never backed down from bullies. That strength came from his mother, whose determination and resilience became the foundation of his character.

By 18 he was working nightclub doors for modest pay, learning quickly about people and life.

“I’ve always had a big heart,” he says. “That’s what my mum taught me.”

"What is the spirit of the Thunderbolt Run and why did Vas create this incredible event?"

Vas’s dream was to bring likeminded people together who share a passion for cars and driving while embarking on an awe-inspiring life altering experience which will create bonds and lifelong friendships with fellow entrants past and present, plus of course a little “friendly rivalry” while networking with like-minded businessman and entrepreneurs.

LOVE, HONOUR, RESPECT

Three words, Love, Honour, Respect, are tattooed on Vas’s arm and guide how he lives his life.

“Contracts don’t mean much to me,” he says. “What matters is my handshake and my word.”

Life tested those values more than once. A failed business partnership left him bankrupt, yet he rebuilt another fitness centre from scratch, eventually growing it to more than 2,400 members. When corporate industry changes forced the business to close, Vas lived in a caravan behind the gym for nine months just to keep it operating.

Giving up was never an option.

LOSS AND PURPOSE

The deeper purpose behind Thunderbolt Run came from personal loss.

During his early working years Vas became close friends with a woman quietly battling severe mental health challenges. Despite encouragement and support, she eventually took her own life.

The loss devastated him.

“I didn’t understand depression or suicide at the time,” Vas recalls. “I kept asking myself why I didn’t see the signs.”

Years later, a chance meeting with her daughter reignited those emotions and inspired Vas to dedicate part of his life to raising awareness around mental health.

A COMMUNITY ON THE ROAD

When Thunderbolt Events launched in 2021, the vision behind Thunderbolt Run was simple: bring together people who share a passion for great cars, incredible driving roads, and meaningful experiences.

But what truly makes Thunderbolt Run special is the community it creates.

Entrants often arrive as strangers, yet by the end of the journey they leave as lifelong friends. The shared adventures, the laughter over dinners, the conversations between drives, and the camaraderie formed on the road create bonds that last well beyond the rally itself.

For Vas, these friendships are the true spirit of Thunderbolt Run.

Each rally blends spectacular driving routes, luxury accommodation, premium dining, and unforgettable social experiences. Along the way there’s always friendly banter, a little healthy rivalry, and opportunities to connect with fellow entrepreneurs, professionals, and car enthusiasts who share a passion for life.

It’s where luxury meets adventure, and where every rally strengthens the growing Thunderbolt Run family.

A RALLY WITH A HEART

Giving back has always been an important part of Thunderbolt Run.

In 2022 and 2023, the event proudly raised awareness and funds for Beyond Blue, supporting Australians experiencing mental health conditions.

In 2024, Thunderbolt Run supported Prostate Cancer awareness, highlighting the importance of men’s health and early detection.

In 2025, Vas connected with Small Steps 4 Hannah, an inspiring charity providing education and support for victims of domestic violence.

And for 2026, Thunderbolt Run will once again support Beyond Blue, raising awareness for mental health while recognizing the incredible work of frontline emergency services, the police, firefighters, paramedics, and military personnel who run toward danger when others run away.

Today more than 3 million Australians live with anxiety or depression, and Thunderbolt Run hopes to play a small part in reminding people that it’s okay to ask for help and that support is always available.

At its heart, Thunderbolt Run is about more than driving incredible roads.

It’s about people, purpose, and connection.

Because sometimes the most powerful journeys aren’t measured in kilometres, but in the friendships formed along the way.
